Have a look at how we created this garden:

  • view from house before we started work

    Brief

This was a small courtyard garden to a modern town house. Bi-fold doors looked out onto a rather uninspiring paved area with a small shed and little else. Our clients wanted an interesting and inviting space with a contemporary feel, to act as an extension to their dining and living areas – somewhere they could entertain and relax.

  • multi materials patio

    Solution

The first task was to produce a design that would disguise the size and boxy shape of the garden, albeit the client had expressed a preference for angles and straight lines as opposed to curves. This was done by introducing a series of squares but set on the angle to disguise the boundaries and increase the apparent width of the garden.

  • outdoor room with a view

A decked area leads out from the house, stepping down to a colour contrasting slate paved patio area with room for a table and chairs. Rendered raised beds increase the feeling of intimacy in this area and also in the rear corner, where an arbour shades a built-in seat with storage underneath.

  • feature plants aluminium tubs

Further contemporary touches were added with aluminium planters and an interesting lighting scheme. The planting scheme was bold using structural plants such as Cordylines, Phormiums and Fatsias, and incorporating old favourites such as Lavender and clipped Box.

  • raised beds

Our clients’ favourite jewel colours bring life to the scheme, with deep blue Agapanthus, rich pink Day Lilies and beautiful purple Clematis among the flowering plants.

  • eco-friendly roofing

As an addition, whereas the first floor bedroom previously overlooked a flat roof, this was planted with a living sedum roof, which is both nicer to look at and environmentally friendly too!
