Brief
This was a long rectangular garden to a large Victorian house, belonging to a young professional couple with a baby boy.
A large lawn provided play space for the baby, and for the rather energetic dog! -
Our clients wanted to retain the shape of the lawn and to keep the existing patio, but to create a second seating area outside the new outdoor room at the end of the garden.
The garden also needed to be practical to use and fairly low-maintenance.

Solution
The first job was to remove the large cherry tree, together with some other trees which were either diseased, or threatening the stability of the boundary wall, to reveal the attractive new summerhouse.

Opening up the view, we designed a black limestone terrace adjacent to the new building to provide the smart, contemporary feel our clients wanted, but surrounded it with a timber handrail to tie in with the colonial feel of the new structure. Lush, tropical-style planting completes the look.

A large rectangular lawn was laid with a stepping stone path leading to the summerhouse, and to either side sleeper raised beds provide planting beds accessible and easy to work, but protected from children and dogs alike!
