Have a look at how we created this garden:
-
Brief
This was the tiny garden to a terraced Victorian house belonging to a young family.
The house had been extended to provide a large kitchen/family dining room with doors to the garden. An attempt had been made at decking outside these doors, but it was not a sensible size for dining. Coming from Australia, our couple really missed the outside space for barbecuing and entertaining. -
The rest of the garden had a shabby lawn and overgrown planting and wasn’t at all suitable for the children. Storage was also required for the family bicycles.
-
Solution
In order to maximise both the apparent, and actual, space in the garden a design based around diagonal lines was employed for the decking area nearest to the house, leading the eye back and forth across the space.
-
Built-in seating provides the opportunity for concealed, sunken storage for the bikes, as well as reducing the need for additional furniture.
-
Rendered raised beds give the contemporary feel our clients were looking for.
Beyond this, a circular area of lawn also tricks the eye as to the width of the garden. As the previous lawn never flourished, and in the interests of low maintenance, we laid artificial turf to make an excellent play surface for the children.
Planting is bold, robust and colourful.
