This is a garden for a basement flat in a large Victorian terraced house in Balham.

Brief

This untidy corner...

became this intimate arbour

Our client lived in a basement flat in a large Victorian terraced house in Balham and the garden space was similarly divided into several smaller areas for the use of its various tenants.

The garden had become a bit of a dumping ground and our client’s main aim was to open it up and create a lush entertaining space for himself and his friends to enjoy, and to provide some privacy from surrounding neighbours.

Solution

This corridor...

became much lighter

To create a feeling of space, the fence dividing our client’s garden and the ‘corridor’ to the neighbour’s garden behind was removed, but privacy was maintained by some tall planting and by enclosing the built-in seating area within contemporary, white, rendered walling. Screening to the buildings behind was provided by a rustic arbour over a chunky deck constructed from reclaimed railway sleepers. A mirror mounted on the gate at the end reflects light back into the space and tropical style planting makes for an exotic feel.

and this dark corner...

became the built-in seating
