Contemporary & Modern Gardens » Traditional but Modern Garden
This was a typical rectangular suburban garden in Orpington, Kent with a rather tired crazy-paved patio and paths, and flower beds with somewhat uninteresting planting.
A large Leylandii hedge, whilst creating some privacy, dominated one side of the garden, requiring regular maintenance to keep it in check and taking up valuable garden space.
Paths across the garden and a large island bed further broke up the space, making it appear much smaller than it actually was.
Our clients wanted to open up the garden revealing it’s true size, whilst still retaining it’s traditional character. They also had a big birthday party in the garden coming up, so time was of the essence!
The old crazy paving was replaced with a deeper, curving patio constructed with creamy-buff natural sandstone, providing a much more useable seating area. To break up the expanse of paving, an attractive circular feature was inserted. Raised planting beds in white render to match the house, with random exposed brick work, surround the patio, creating a feeling of intimacy and enclosure. Hardwood benches were also incorporated into the raised beds to provide additional seating.
A sinuous stepping stone path leads from the patio to another area of circular paving, to take advantage of the afternoon sun, and then on to the pretty summerhouse beyond.
The new lawn has been shaped with curving borders, cut to add interest and to allow for layered planting in the traditional style. Old favourites such as Lavender, Columbines, Day Lilies, Red Hot Pokers and Peonies add colour to the sunny borders, whilst the shadier areas are given interest with Japanese Maples, Camellias and Rhododendrons. In order to retain privacy, trellis was added to the fences and climbers such as Roses, Jasmine and Clematis planted to provide colour and scent.
Finally, an antique-style sundial and bird bath were added to further enhance the traditional feel.
