Small Gardens » Doctor's Orders
This is the back garden to a substantial Edwardian terraced house in Streatham with many attractive period features.
The house interiors are finished to a high standard and the owners wanted the garden to reflect the quality, style and age of the property to provide a relaxing space in which to dine and entertain.
The dining room has the original French doors and large windows, which provide a wonderful view onto the outside space. The décor is quite neutral which touches of soft green giving a very tranquil feel to the room and our clients wanted that feeling of tranquillity to be repeated in the new garden.
We wanted to introduce some curves in the new plan, which will not only make the garden appear larger, but also disguise the rather boxy shape of the space.
There is a new patio next the house to accommodate about 10-12 people at any one time that is surrounded on either side with raised beds, built using yellow stock bricks to match the house. One bed incorporates a built-in seat with storage underneath.
We designed a curvaceous lawn surrounded by lush planting beds, sweeping towards a naturalistic water feature at the back of the garden. A natural-looking water course falls gently over and between smooth boulders and cobbles into a raised fish pond that can also be seen from the house. Planting will, in time, soften the stone, making it look as though it has always been there.
In the other corner there is a gazebo with integrated storage.
The planting scheme is lush, with plenty of year-round interest from both the flowers and the foliage. We incorporated a mix of evergreen and deciduous plants, with colourful leaves, contrasting forms and also beautiful flowers.
There are perfumed plants near the seating areas and some herbs near to the kitchen and we used our clients’ favourite plants, including Agapanthus and Alliums and we included a small ‘family’ apple tree.
Tall planting at the back of the garden hides the neighbour’s shed.
Lighting adds an exciting dimension to the garden, making it not only useable on summer evenings, but also visually accessible in the winter months. With inset lighting to the raised bed walls and paving and up-lighting to the trees, structural planting and water feature, the effects are dramatic. However, with the use of different circuits, a more subtle feel can be achieved, according to the mood and occasion.
Finally, we included a barbecue chimney and an automated irrigation system.
