This was a garden in Surbiton where our clients had recently had a large extension built and were now looking to have their long, thin garden overhauled.

Our clients had recently had a large extension built and were now looking to have their long, thin garden overhauled. An uninteresting lawn stretched from one end to the other with a dip in the middle and a shed at one end.

The aim was to provide the two small children with some dedicated play space and a pleasing garden for the adults to enjoy together with a paved area large enough to entertain in.

Solution:

The first task was to solve the drainage problem caused by run-off from the neighbour’s garden. This was done by constructing a soakaway under the new lawn.

The new design was intended to counteract the narrowness and length of the garden by bringing a series of triangular raised beds jutting into the garden at intervals. These beds also served to disguise the retaining wall to next door.

A large new sandstone patio provides a pleasant seating area near to the house and a large area has been set aside for the children at the rear, housing their climbing frame and mulched with a thick layer of play-bark.

Colourful planting and an attractive new summerhouse complete the scene.
