This is the rear garden to a large terraced Victorian property in Maida Vale, London.
Brief:
The owners have young children but little use could be made of the garden as it was, with its small impractical patio area, even smaller deck and patch of very worn lawn, due to the poor drainage in the garden.
A steep staircase with high risers and narrow treads down from the drawing room also made this a potentially treacherous space for the children, or adults alike, as well as eating into the garden space.
Solution:
The problem of the staircase was addressed by installing a bespoke spiral staircase and balcony with opaque glass floor, deeper than the existing, but taking up less space and letting more light into the bedroom below.
The apparent size of the garden overall was increased by introducing a circular theme, with paving and lawns.
The drainage problem was tackled by laying artificial turf as a play surface, also eradicating the maintenance issues usually associated with lawns.
The large patio area was laid to natural sandstone and a barbecue was built-in for entertaining.
For the children an exciting bespoke play structure was constructed to the rear of the garden with practical storage built-in underneath.
