Long Thin Gardens » Inside Out

The was the garden of an eighteenth century cottage in a conservation area in Westerham Kent.

Brief

The garden of an eighteenth century cottage in a conservation area, this space was very long and thin and, laid to an overgrown lawn with a tiny patio at either end. It was neither attractive to look at, nor practical to use.

Our client had a very hectic lifestyle, but wanted to be able to use her garden as a valuable outside entertaining space and as somewhere to relax after a busy day.

Solution

In order to counteract the length of the garden it was designed with a lozenge-shaped lawn around which the path curved, from a small stone terrace at one end for breakfasting, to a large outdoor room at the other for entertaining. This building, for which planning permission had to be obtained from the local council, was constructed from bricks to match the listed building to the rear. It had a decked floor and, concealed to the rear behind sliding doors, a valuable storage area. A beautiful and practical circular chimney was constructed which can be used either to barbecue, or simply to warm the room for use all year round.

A custom-made galvanised staircase to access the garden from the kitchen replaced the tired original and clever lighting and structural planting, with the client’s requested colour palette of lemons and plums, completed this contemporary oasis.
