This garden is in fact a tiny enclosed courtyard, surrounded by tall buildings, in central London.
Our client was in the process of completely renovating the interiors of the property and wanted an outside space to reflect its period details, and also to provide a green oasis in which to escape the stresses of city life.
The space had already been paved by our client’s builders using a traditional style grey stone, but otherwise it was a blank canvas.
Solution:
This project was all about making the best use of the space and as the courtyard was completely surrounded by high walls, we utilised the verticals by commissioning bespoke trellis work, painted a heritage shade of green, onto which many scented climbing plants were then trained to provide living walls of planting.
Mirrored arches were also commissioned and these give a feeling of depth and help to increase the apparent space in the garden. A two-way mirror also cleverly disguises an ugly window on a neighbouring property.
Tall tree ferns were planted in the corners to eventually reach the tops of the walls, providing a lush green canopy and also privacy from a neighbouring fire escape. Otherwise the planting is very traditional in feel with cottage garden plants mixing with structural favourites such as tall Italian Cypress and Box spirals.
The traditional water fountain, built in to the raised beds, constructed in reclaimed London stocks, adds to the classic feel of the garden.
