This was a typical long, narrow suburban garden in Beckenham, Kent with an ugly concrete patio and a boring rectangular lawn with sparse planting.

Brief

Our clients had a typical long, narrow suburban garden with an ugly concrete patio and a boring rectangular lawn with sparse planting. The ‘runway’ effect of the central path also meant that the eye was drawn straight to the end of the garden and the ugly buildings beyond. The brief was to create a more interesting outside space where they could relax and entertain.

Solution

A design incorporating curves and circles disguises the rectangular shape of the garden and the sinuous hoggin path leads the eye across the space, making it appear much wider.

Natural sandstone with all its beautiful colour variations replaces the dull grey paving. An additional paved circle at the back of the garden provides another relaxing seating area and the timber arbour over it will, in time, become covered in scented climbers, providing dappled shade. A quirky touch was added by incorporating the client’s own reclaimed antique fire surround.

Planting is low maintenance, but colourful, both in foliage and flower.

With all this interest the eye is now kept firmly in the garden and the unsightly buildings beyond are not now the first thing you see, but just in case, bamboos were also planted at the back of the garden and these will soon grow up to hide them even more.
