The transformation…
This generous space was need in of an uplift to bring it in line with the lovely contemporary interior of the clients home. Previously the garden had a patio but was slightly on the small side so we increased the surface area to accommodate a larger table and more chairs. To give more seating options we built a bespoke seating area with hidden storage which then had raised beds built behind them creating a lovely area to sit and relax.
Knowing our always unpredictable British summers we also installed a shade sail to not only provide cover during our rare scorching days but also to offer shelter during the more frequent rainy summer days.
We wanted to keep the lawn area as large as possible to give the kids ample space to play but instead opted for artificial turf. This kind of turf has many benefits namely the low maintenance and ability to look attractive in heavily shaded areas where previously grass did struggle.
To capture some of the evening sunshine we built a second seating area, by building a contemporary-style pergola over the composite deck we have created a useful and attractive spot to help break up the lawn area.
To add to the sensory qualities of the new garden we added a water feature which will add not only the sound of trickling water, but also the sparkle, especially when up-lit at night.
Lighting will add another exciting dimension to the garden, making it not only useable on summer evenings, but also visually accessible in the winter months. With inset lighting to the paving, deck, and bench seat bases, down-lighting to the pergola and up-lighting to trees, water feature and structural planting, the effects can be dramatic.
In terms of planting our client liked the idea of bright colours mixed with foliage contrasting both in form and colour so that’s exactly what we gave them! Finally we also created a herb garden for them near the house giving them easy access to herbs for cooking-yum!
