These are the front and rear gardens to a double-fronted, period property in Sydenham. Its owners had spent a lot of time renovating the property and wanted to bring the gardens up to the same standard, to provide both a welcoming entrance to their home at the front, and a beautiful space in which to relax and entertain at the rear.


The front garden had a low, rendered boundary wall, in need of repair, both copings to match the originals, and a partially tiled path to the front door.

The rear garden was on two levels, with raised beds and steps dividing the two areas. There was also access to the neighbours’ garden through a trellis archway.


In the front garden…

We restored the look of the old path by replacing the broken red and black tiles with new ones, but in the Victorian style. The step up to the porch was too high so we added another, extending out further down the path.

We rebuilt the broken wall with copings to match the originals and to add interest, colour and scent, we introduced some low maintenance Lavender. A pebble mulch to the whole area adds an attractive finish.

In the rear garden…

We created a more usable and attractive space – an ‘outdoor room’.

Our clients wanted to keep their shed, although we moved its position and we built a new log store and kept the original water butt.

The access to their neighbours’ garden was kept although we changed the boundary trellis fence and created a new ‘Art Deco’ style arch.

We changed the top level of the garden so that it is closer to the house to give a larger area for entertaining below. There are raised beds constructed using railway sleepers dividing the two areas and these are at a height to allow casual seating.

We widened the steps to the lower area to make it seem more open and to facilitate easy transition between the two spaces. This also gives room for additional informal table and seating. Our clients were fond of their blue back wall, which we kept and we changed the existing trellis on top to give a more contemporary feel.

The paving we used is riven sandstone to give a non-slip, natural feel.

We included a contemporary, self-contained water feature, using a combination of stainless steel and glass, to add the pleasing dimension of sound and movement. Lighting adds a further exciting dimension to the garden, making it not only usable on summer evenings, but also visually accessible in the winter months.
